Beautiful Barbados Highlights

Barbados is an amazing getaway Island, not only does it offer beautiful sandy beaches, but also a cultural heritage and a wide array of sightseeing attractions and a range of shore excursions.

The Island of Barbados

In general the cruise ships usually go to Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados. The pier/dock is within a 15-20 minute walk of the Bridgetown city centre where there is a vibrant shopping district and quick and easy access to the beaches near by.

Barbados is also rich in history and culture; therefore, there are plenty of historical tourist attractions to see. Museums, churches, forts, government buildings. The history and architecture of Barbados is very closely linked to the British empire of the seventeenth century.

Shore Excursions
For people who would rather have an adventure than lie on the beach there is a vast array of shore excursions available in Barbados. Barbados also offers submarine and scuba tours, deep sea fishing, boat cruises offering a chance to swim with giant sea turtles, island tours by off-road vehicles, on horse back, on bicycle or on foot.

Barbados is one of the few places in the world where you are able to swim with the local sea turtle populations, this is an experience you will not forget and there is a good chance that it will be the highlight of your cruise.

Zip lining / Canopy tour’s are not something you would expect to see in Barbados considering its flat landscape and low level of trees. But within the last year an 8 line Canopy adventure course has been built over a series of caves that collapsed hundreds of years ago leaving 300ft gullies and crevasses between trees.

The Green Monkey Encounter is something that is definitely worth a look, if you have children or are looking at getting up close and personal with monkeys this is the tour for you.

Eating in Barbados
If you haven’t eaten enough on the cruise ship then Barbados has some great restaurants within walking distance of the Cruise Ship terminal. You can see the center of town flag on the map above which is where all the main restaurants are located.

Barbados Beaches

Brighton / Brandon Beach

Brighton / Brandon Beach

Barbados has many beaches to choose from, All the beaches I have been to have been white sand and crystal blue water. With your short amount of time off the ship you will want to hit one of the closer beaches so that you are able to get there easily, spend a nice amount of time on the beach relaxing and swimming and then head back to the ship with some time to spare (ships do leave if you are late, but not if you are on a ship planned shore excursion).

On the map above I have marked two beaches that are within a 5 minute taxi ride from the Cruise Ship terminal. The first beach is South of the Cruise Ship terminal called Carlisle Bay Beach it is approximately 3 miles long and has full facilities available including access to food, drinks, beach chairs and life guards on watch. The facilities can be a bit more expensive here because it is where many of the cruise ship visitors come. On that note it can also get very busy and if there are more than three cruise ships docked in Barbados it can become almost impossible to get a chair.

The second beach is located to the North of the Cruise Ship terminal. Brighton / Brandon Beach is a 1.5 mile long beach which is more secluded than Carlisle Bay which, for many is a welcome after being on a Cruise Ship for more than one day. Brighton / Brandon Beach has less facilities than Carlisle Bay and make sure you leave some time to get back to the ship.
